- Analog: One of the best free log analyser I have seen. It can be easily customized to work with various platforms and logs of all formats. The built-in dns lookup is quite slow, but there are several programs that work with analog to solve this problem.
- CSS Reference Table: Quick and complete reference for CSS. I personally can never remember how the syntax works exactly so this is a great help to me.
- MySQL Reference Manual: For a free software the documentation for MySQL is really good.
- PostgreSQL Documentation: Really it is not that bad of a database!
- W3Schools: Tutorials on everything for the web. It also contains complete references for the most up-to-date web standards.
- MiKTeX: Nice TeX package for windows. I use TeXnicCenter with this for typesetting just any kind of document.
- TeXnicCenter: Great integrated development environment for developing LaTeX documents on Windows machines. Easy to install and use.
- TeXShop: This is what I use on my mac. The install may seem a little weird and long, but it is actually not so bad. Just remember to follow the directions.
- Endangered Species: A good overview.
- Facing the Future: People and the Planet: Follow the popinfo link if you don't think overpopulation is a problem.
- Population Action International: Very informative site on population related issues. Has lots of statistics.
- Red List of Threatened Species: List of endangered species of the current year.
- My Fish Tank: The best fish related site I have found so far. Their discussion board is powered by vBulletin.
- True Aquarium Plants: I buy plants from them sometimes. They carry more varieties than the local fish shop. Very friendly place.
- All Recipes: My favorite places to search for recipes on the Web. The rating system is especially helpful.
- Cooking Light: Healthy recipes.
- FitDay: FitDay lets you track how much you eat and burn everyday.
- A Healthy Me: A nice site with plenty of information on just about any health issues.
- Mike's Calorie and Fat Gram Chart for 1000 Foods: Offers charts sorted alphabetically or by calories, fat, carbs. It is useful for people who would like to watch what they eat.
- BBC News: A good source for international news.
- Christian Science Monitor: It often carries interesting in depth stories that for the most part have nothing to do with religion.
- CSPAN: I am what you would call a cspan addict. It doesn't help that we even have cspan radio on 90.1FM in the DC metro area.
- New York Times: I enjoy reading the paper online. There are always plenty of interesting articles.
- Piled Higher and Deeper: You don't have to be a PhD student to appreciate this. I totally think DailyIllini should run this.
- WETA: WETA is our preferred PBS station in the DC metro area. We also listen to the WETA radio station almost daily. I consider PBS one of the best things on TV.
- WLS Newstalk 890AM: My favorite show is on 2 to 6pm weekdays. Roe and Garry are awesome. You can listen to the station over the internet.
- Xinmin Evening News: I used to read this paper every day when I was in Shanghai. Now I read it almost daily online. Be warned though that it is entirely in Chinese.
- Shanghai.gov.cn: City of Shanghai's official site.
- Shanghai.online.sh.cn: A nice site available in both Chinese and English.
- China Travel Service: Shanghai: The old pictures section offers a great collection of old pictures of the city from the 19th century. The cuisine section makes my mouth water every time I visit the site.
- Shanghai Photos: Personal photo galleries in both Chinese and English. There are often nice pictures portraying everyday life in the city.
