Database and Web Technologies
  • Analog:  One of the best free log analyser I have seen. It can be easily customized to work with various platforms and logs of all formats. The built-in dns lookup is quite slow, but there are several programs that work with analog to solve this problem.
  • CSS Reference Table:  Quick and complete reference for CSS. I personally can never remember how the syntax works exactly so this is a great help to me.
  • MySQL Reference Manual:  For a free software the documentation for MySQL is really good.
  • PostgreSQL Documentation:  Really it is not that bad of a database!
  • W3Schools:  Tutorials on everything for the web. It also contains complete references for the most up-to-date web standards.
TeX
  • MiKTeX:  Nice TeX package for windows. I use TeXnicCenter with this for typesetting just any kind of document.
  • TeXnicCenter:  Great integrated development environment for developing LaTeX documents on Windows machines. Easy to install and use.
  • TeXShop:  This is what I use on my mac. The install may seem a little weird and long, but it is actually not so bad. Just remember to follow the directions.
Environmental Issues
Fish and Aquarium
  • My Fish Tank:  The best fish related site I have found so far. Their discussion board is powered by vBulletin.
  • True Aquarium Plants:  I buy plants from them sometimes. They carry more varieties than the local fish shop. Very friendly place.
A Healthy Life Style
  • All Recipes:  My favorite places to search for recipes on the Web. The rating system is especially helpful.
  • Cooking Light:  Healthy recipes.
  • FitDay:  FitDay lets you track how much you eat and burn everyday.
  • A Healthy Me:  A nice site with plenty of information on just about any health issues.
  • Mike's Calorie and Fat Gram Chart for 1000 Foods:  Offers charts sorted alphabetically or by calories, fat, carbs. It is useful for people who would like to watch what they eat.
Media
  • BBC News:  A good source for international news.
  • Christian Science Monitor:  It often carries interesting in depth stories that for the most part have nothing to do with religion.
  • CSPAN:  I am what you would call a cspan addict. It doesn't help that we even have cspan radio on 90.1FM in the DC metro area.
  • New York Times:  I enjoy reading the paper online. There are always plenty of interesting articles.
  • Piled Higher and Deeper:  You don't have to be a PhD student to appreciate this. I totally think DailyIllini should run this.
  • WETA:  WETA is our preferred PBS station in the DC metro area. We also listen to the WETA radio station almost daily. I consider PBS one of the best things on TV.
  • WLS Newstalk 890AM:  My favorite show is on 2 to 6pm weekdays. Roe and Garry are awesome. You can listen to the station over the internet.
  • Xinmin Evening News:  I used to read this paper every day when I was in Shanghai. Now I read it almost daily online. Be warned though that it is entirely in Chinese.
Shanghai
  • Shanghai.gov.cn:  City of Shanghai's official site.
  • Shanghai.online.sh.cn:  A nice site available in both Chinese and English.
  • China Travel Service: Shanghai:  The old pictures section offers a great collection of old pictures of the city from the 19th century. The cuisine section makes my mouth water every time I visit the site.
  • Shanghai Photos:  Personal photo galleries in both Chinese and English. There are often nice pictures portraying everyday life in the city.
